Karl XI
During his reign from 1672 -1697, Charles XI made many trips through Sweden. He would rather be hunting or practicing with the army than attend meetings at the castle.
Around 1690, Karl XI visited Älvkarleby and took in the inn in Västanå. When he traveled on horseback, he had a talkative shooting boy behind him on horseback. When they were about to cross a stream, the king spurred the horse so that the boy fell off in the middle of the stream. Wet and annoyed, the boy ran after and when he caught up with the king, he said angrily: "When everyone can do as he pleases, he does as he is a man".
The shooting boy had to sit on the horse again and insisted on complaining about how the king behaved. The king tried to reassure him that they would probably become good friends again. When they arrived at the next shooting range, the king issued a gift certificate at the inn in Västanå to the boy and his descendants. Under his name Carolus, he wrote: "When everyone is allowed to do as he pleases, he does as he is a man".
