The church's history

Already around the year 1800, requests for a new church building within Västland's parish began to be made. At that time, the congregation consisted of both the Twelfth Congregation and the Westland Congregation. However, it was only around the year 1847 that the matter was dealt with and drawings were sent to the responsible authorities – the Office of the Superintendent. The drawing proposal had been drawn up by county architect C. A. Setterberg, Gävle. In fact, the proposal was copies of drawings that the architect J. F. Åbom had made the year before for Hamrånge church in Gästrikland.

However, the drawings had been refused by the authorities. Builder Setterberg had, however, made some changes, including what concerned the church's bell tower. The application for approval of the drawings was rejected by the office. When construction of the church began in the mid-1850s, the Setterberg clock tower was still included. Despite the office's opposition to a bell tower, it can still be said that the church has won the disobedience!

The site for the construction took place on land that had long belonged to the vicarage. The appearance of the gravel pit, however, meant that the church choirs were oriented towards the south and not, as usual, towards the east. The character of the interior is characterized by the high central nave with its wooden barrel vault. The narrower side naves have been given flat roofs. In connection with a major renovation in 1922–1924, the church received, among other things, the three chancel windows with stained glass made by Neuman & Vogel, Stockholm.

Only in 1956–1957 and in 1962 were more extensive renovations carried out following proposals by architects Ärland Nooren and Carl Hampus Bergman. Among other things, a bridal chamber and a small chapel called the Angarskapellet were furnished under the stand. The interior was painted in a warmer color scale. Furthermore, the tower portal received new copper doors based on a drawing by Ärland Nooren.
